Collection: Laranja do Algarve

“In Portugal, 80 to 100 tonnes of oranges are harvested every day. The vast majority of this fruit, the most consumed in the world, is grown in the south of the country. It arrived with the explorers in the 16th century...” (RTP, n.d.)

Portuguese orange exports to Europe date back to the 16th century. The role Portugal played in spreading this fruit is still visible today in the words “portocálâ”, “portukal”, “portukáli” and “portokalli”, which mean orange in Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek and Albanian, respectively. In Arabic, the word “Portugal” means “orange” 🧡

According to RTP, the Algarve is the main citrus-producing region. In 2017, production reached its highest level since 1986. The Algarve accounts for 83% of national production and 74% of the planted area, and its fruit is known for its intense colour, strong sweetness and juiciness.

The “Laranja do Algarve” collection reflects, and proves, the exhaustive and dedicated work needed for any professional to succeed. A personal reflection, expressed in light, comfortable pieces handmade in Portugal 🍊
